The broadcast television upfront season is upon us, but the mood is perhaps a little less over-the-top than usual. In this great article about the state of TV viewership, many factors are discussed. One stat that I thought was particularly striking was that, at least in the Nielsen home panel sample, DVR (time shifting devices like Tivo) penetration has soared to 24%. While that alone doesn't explain the drop in the TV viewership ratings points, it does hint at the need to develop new ways of reaching consumers and measuring across the rapidly evolving media landscape.
